Grads and undergrads to present findings during research showcase

March 31 2008

TERRE HAUTE " After months of research, Indiana State University’s students have an opportunity to present their findings during the 12th annual Undergraduate and Graduate Research Showcase on Wednesday.

The showcase allows students, who are in engaged in original and creative research under faculty supervision, an opportunity to tell others about their specialized work.

“It’s always good for researchers to present their findings of work in public,” said Eric Glendening, chemistry chair, interim physics chair and showcase co-chair. “Doing research in a vacuum isn’t good for anyone.”

Students will take their research out of the vacuum and move it into one of four categories: biological and health sciences; physical science, technology and engineering; fine arts and humanities; and business, education and social science. Winners will be selected out of each of the categories for graduate and undergraduate students.

Sixteen students will give 15-minute oral presentations on subjects ranging from “Mothers Forewarn Offspring About Predators: A Transgenerational Maternal Effect in Behavior” to “Examining the Motivation of Reading, Writing and Culture Awareness Through Net Pal Activities Between American and Taiwanese Children.” Oral presentations begin at 5:30 p.m. and continue until 7 p.m. in Hulman Memorial Student Union rooms 407, 421 and 416.

Additionally, 37 students will have poster presentations of their work in HMSU Dede II and III. Those topics encompass limb regeneration; a study of black men at predominantly white institutions; a history of Terre Haute’s gambling past and methane to methanol conversion.

Students and faculty will gather in HMSU Dede III at 7:45 p.m. for the awards presentation.

The showcase is sponsored by the School of Graduate Studies.
