Team Sycamore Racing members to visit Warsaw schools

May 1 2008

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Indiana State University’s student racing team, Team Sycamore Racing, will bring motorsports to Warsaw Community School students on May 13.

Area middle and high school students will hear presentations on how Team Sycamore Racing members are combining their college majors with an interest in motorsports in addition to checking out the team’s dragster and taking a turn on a drag racing simulator.

“This experience will introduce students to careers in motorsports and what opportunities can be found at Indiana State,” said Randy Peters, motorsports coordinator for the College of Technology.

Warsaw students will hear from Team Sycamore Racing members Arlo Daunhauer, Kayla Koch, Kasey Lientz, Jenalee Cooksey, Mike Mauntel, Matt Williams and Derek Parkes about the roles they fill in the organization.

“We’re excited about sharing our racing and educational experiences with the students,” Daunhauer, team president, said. “We want to let them know that there’s something for everyone in the motorsports field - from the technical aspects of the car to hospitality, business and communications.”

Community members are invited to stop by Edgewood Middle School between 3-5 p.m. May 13 to view Team Sycamore Racing’s drag car and learn more about opportunities in motorsports by talking to team members.

Team Sycamore Racing began in 2007 at Indiana State. Students, with guidance from faculty members, devised and implemented a plan to operate a drag racing business to compete in the 2008 NHRA Super Comp Division 3 Lucas Oil Series. Students are active in all areas of the team including driving, engineering components, acquiring sponsorships, creating graphics, event planning, and marketing.

In their first divisional competition on April 20 in Indianapolis, Team Sycamore Racing came away with the Best Appearing Crew award and went to the fourth round of competition with Parkes at the wheel.

The student-organized team is open to all Indiana State students, regardless of major. Parkes, one of the team’s three drivers, is a pre-med major. Williams, another driver, is a sport and recreation management major.

“What sets Team Sycamore Racing apart from the others is our diversity,” Peters said. “We have students from all areas of campus working together for a common interest.”
