Author and professor Kathleen Hall Jamieson to speak Sept. 15

September 5 2008

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Author and professor Kathleen Hall Jamieson will speak at 7 p.m. Sept. 15, in Indiana State University's Tilson Auditorium to kickoff the University Speakers Series. A book signing and reception in Heritage Lounge is planned immediately following her talk. Both the presentation and reception are free and open to the public.

Jamieson is the Elizabeth Ware Packard Professor of Communication at the Annenberg School for Communication. She also serves as the Walter and Leonore Annenberg Director of the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania.

She is the author, co author or editor of 15 books including: "Presidents Creating the Presidency," "Echo Chamber: Rush Limbaugh and the Conservative Media Establishment" and "unSpun: Finding Facts in a World of Disinformation."

Americans are bombarded daily with mixed messages, half-truths, misleading statements, and out-and-out fabrications masquerading as facts.

"unSpun" is the secret decoder ring for the 21st century world of disinformation. Written by Jamieson and Brooks Jackson, founders of FactCheck.org, the book reveals the secrets of separating facts from disinformation, such as the warning signs of spin, hype, and bogus news and how to find trustworthy and objective sources of information.

During the 2004 general election, Jamieson regularly appeared on NOW with Bill Moyers and The Newshour and throughout the 2008 campaign is appearing regularly on Bill Moyers Journal.

Due to construction, participants need to enter Tirey Hall through the west doors.

Jamieson's book, "unSpun: Finding Facts in a World of Disinformation," was ISU's 2008 Summer Reading Program selection. Her visit is being sponsored by First Year Programs, OLLI at ISU and the University Speakers Series.
