Education policy leaders to speak at ISU on Friday

Indiana State University's department of educational leadership administration and foundations (ELAF) presents a panel discussion on public policy featuring a 2008 Distinguished Alumni Award winner, Mary Kay Sommers.

From 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. on Friday in the College of Business 11th Floor Conference Room, a panel of education officials will discuss "Public Policy in Turbulent Times: What Do K-12 and Higher Education Administrators Need to Know'"

The panel features Marilyn Schultz, executive director of MySmartGov.org, former director of Indiana State Budget Agency, and former ISU vice-president for planning and budgets; Sommers, immediate past president of the National Association of Elementary School Principals; and Todd Bess, a participant in ELAF sponsored Federal Policy Seminar in Washington, D.C. this week also will be on the panel.

Remarks will focus on current and emerging public policy affecting K-12, higher education, and P-16 thinking, including as may be impacted by financial market challenges sweeping the nation and world. Vigo County Superintendent of Schools Daniel Tanoos will moderate.

Sommers has been in education ever since graduating from Indiana State in 1968 with a degree in elementary education and is the immediate past president of the National Association of Elementary School Principals. She has testified to Congress regarding the No Child Left Behind Act.

After spending 15 years as an elementary school teacher in Indiana public schools, she moved from the classroom into school administration in 1979 as principal of an elementary school in West Lafayette. She served as the school district's elementary curriculum director in 1985.

In 1987 she moved to Colorado, working at three schools before taking her current position as principal of Shephardson Elementary School in Fort Collins.
