Oldest ISU professor dies at 104

January 5 2006

Faculty and staff returning to the Indiana State University campus following Winter Break learned of the death of the university's oldest professor emeritus.

Cloyd Anthony, professor of sociology from 1945-68, died Dec. 27 in Sebring, Fla., where he resided following his retirement. Also an alumnus of Indiana State, Anthony lived through nearly two-thirds of the university's 140-year history.

A Terre Haute native, Anthony taught in a one-room elementary school for two years before enrolling in what was then Indiana State Normal School in 1925. After completing his bachelor's degree at Indiana State, he earned both a master's and Ph.D from Indiana University and completed post-doctoral work at the University of Minnesota and the University of Missouri.

He was principal at Central Missouri State Teachers' College's Lab School from 1936 - 44 and was a faculty member at Michigan State University in 1944.

During a 2002 interview after receiving an honorary Ph.D. from Indiana State, Anthony said he never once regretted devoting his life to teaching, though he quipped that his highest salary was $15,500 per year and that was as department chair.

"I spent my years meeting all kinds of bright people - and some not so bright - who challenged my abilities as a teacher," Anthony said. "One of the greatest rewards is when someone will come up to me who was in my class years and years ago and remember something I taught them."

A scholarship endowed by Anthony and named for him benefits Indiana State sociology majors who demonstrate financial need.

"The university is saddened by the passing of Cloyd Anthony, who dedicated his life to the noble pursuit of teaching, but we are pleased that his memory and the ideals to which he subscribed will live on in a scholarship that bears his name," said ISU President Lloyd W. Benjamin III.

Anthony is survived by a son, Mark, and daughter, Mary Anthony Gardner, both of Sebring, as well as 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
