ISU's University Symphony to present Beethoven's Fifth

Virtually every note of this masterpiece by Beethoven is based on the famous and most compact and powerful motive in all of music, the "short-short-short-long" opening theme. Written in 1805-7, the piece was revolutionary in its driving energy, structure, and instrumentation. Three instruments make their first appearance in a "classical" era symphony: the piccolo, contra-bassoon, and trombone, representing an unheard-of expansion in high range, low range, and power.
The concert will conclude with the Prelude and Introduction to Act III of Richard Wagner's opera Lohengrin. The University Symphony is under the direction of William Davis. The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, call 237-2771.
