Karen Liu, professor of early childhood education at Indiana State University, has been named president-elect for the Association for Childhood Education International (ACEI).

Liu will serve a one-year term, followed by a two-year term as president. Her term officially began at the conclusion of ACEI's Annual Conference (April 12-15) in San Antonio, Texas.

An active member with ACEI for 20 years, Liu has previously served ACEI as Member-at-Large (1999-2001), "Week of the Classroom Teacher" Committee Chair (1999-2001), "Hall of Excellence" coordinator (1999-2001), ACEI/NCATE Program Reviewer (2001-present), International/Intercultural Committee member (1995-96), and Infancy/Early Childhood Committee member, (1990-1997, 2004-present). She is a regular presenter at the ACEI annual conference and a member of her local ACEI Branch, Indiana ACEI, since 1990.

"I believe that one of my most important contributions to ACEI as President-Elect would be my dedication and commitment to a vision of a strong, professional organization with diverse members who model the best practices for the care and education of children and who collaborate with other professional and NGO organizations to lead the international standards movement," Liu said. "I will strive to reconstruct and evolve our international contacts and mission into one that increases our prestige and publicity, both nationally and globally."

Liu received her doctorate degree from Michigan State University in 1982 and taught early childhood education at the University of Minnesota-Waseca prior to coming to Indiana State.

Liu has received several research grants and awards, such as a curriculum development grant, University Research grant, National Development Foundation Fellowship Award, outstanding leadership award, Hoosier Educator Award, Distinguished Service Award, Multicultural and Diversity Advocate Award, President's Diversity Leadership Award, and the Holmstedt Distinguished Professor Award, among others.

ACEI is the oldest professional organization in the world dedicated to the development of the child, from birth to early adolescence. Its primary purpose is to promote the inherent rights, education and well-being of all children in school, home, and the community. Members are educators, parents, and other caregivers who are dedicated to a flexible, child-centered approach to education and have a genuine interest in helping each child learn successfully and fulfill his or her potential.
