Sycamore Service Corps looking for Volunteers

July 27 2006

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Sycamore Service Corps, a local program of Americorps comprised of local residents and students from the Wabash Valley's higher education institutions, is looking for volunteers to serve non-profit organizations in the Wabash Valley.

The AmeriCorps Sycamore Service Corps, coordinated by Indiana State University's Center for Public Service and Community Engagement, is a program of our nation's domestic service corps that addresses community needs in education, public safety, human services, and the environment while allowing volunteers to earn compensation and an educational award.

Members agree to serve 300, 450, or 675 hours of service within an 11-month or less time frame. The Sycamore Service Corps is open to individuals and non-profit agencies in Clay, Parke, Sullivan, Vermillion, and Vigo counties.

Applicants accepted into the Sycamore Service Corps become AmeriCorps members. Most positions provide a monthly living allowance. All members receive a $1,000 - $1,800 educational award at the completion of their service.

AmeriCorps members must be U.S. Citizens or lawful permanent residents of the U.S. and at least 18 years of age.

Volunteers also learn new skills, develop leadership skills and gain a sense of satisfaction from making a difference in their communities.

"The Sycamore Service Corps AmeriCorps Program is a great opportunity for local residents or students to provide meaningful service to non-profit agencies and to make a difference in the community. A variety of positions are available such as tutoring children, mentoring and leading youth programs and activities, and assisting families in locating needed resources," said Debbie Miller, director of AmeriCorps Programs at ISU.

AmeriCorps members receive excellent professional development and ongoing training as well as the opportunity to attend state events with AmeriCorps members from across the state of Indiana, Miller added.

The Sycamore Service Corps is part of the national AmeriCorps Program. The Corporation for National and Community Service and the Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives oversee the local Program.

Applications are now being accepted for the 2006-2007 AmeriCorps Programs. For more information or to download the application, go to http://www.indstate.edu/publicservice/students/americorps.htm. Priority will be given to those applications received before Aug. 15. Selected members will have from late September or early October, 2006 until August 2007 to complete the required hours.
