ISU Librarian Receives National Honor

September 6 2006

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - An associate librarian at Indiana State University's Cunningham Memorial Library was one of two individuals recognized by the American Society for Information Science & Technology (ASIS&T) for his service and leadership.

Steven Hardin, who has been on the library faculty for 16 years, currently serving as a reference/instruction librarian, was recently named one of two recipients of the organization's Watson Davis award, presented annually by ASIS&T recognizing individuals for their service and leadership. Recipients must be a member for at least five years, service the organization in many levels and contribute to publications and annual conferences.

Hardin, a 20-year member, has served as the Indiana chapter chair, headed up the membership committee and served on the national board of directors. He is currently serving on the ASIS&T Bulletin advisory committee and as records holder for the Indiana chapter in addition to duties on the membership committee.

"This is a great honor. I'd hoped I would receive this award someday, but I really wasn't expecting this," he said.

Pascal Calarco, Indiana chapter chair, said, "Steve has been very dedicated on the state and local level. He's been a wonderful person to bring new people into the organization and to make them feel welcome."

Myrna McCallister, dean of the Cunningham Memorial Library, said, 'Receiving the Watson Davis Award for outstanding service to the profession is a tremendous honor for Steve. To have amongst us, someone who is singled out for this award is something that makes all of us proud to have him as a colleague."

ASIS&T, in existence since 1937, counts among its membership some 4,000 information specialists from such fields as computer science, linguistics, management, librarianship, engineering, law, medicine, chemistry, and education; individuals who share a common interest in improving the ways society stores, retrieves, analyzes, manages, archives and disseminates information, coming together for mutual benefit. -30-
