Media Advisory: ISU's Center for Math Education hosts hands-on activities for area teachers

February 8 2006

WHAT:
The Center for Mathematics Education at Indiana State University is sponsoring a variety of hands-on "Number Sense" workshops for area teachers. Featured workshops will include:

"ON and ON and ON," focusing on the use of calculators to explore patterns in repeating decimals, for teachers of students in grades 5 to 7. Teachers will use what they learn to understand how to write repeating decimals as fractions without using algebra. The presenter for this session will be Elizabeth Jones, assistant professor in ISU's department of math and computer science.

"What's My Line?" will use Cuisenaire rods to explore fractions, for teachers of students in grades 3 through 4. The "What's My Line" activity allows for valuable spatial experiences within a hands-on activity. The presenter will be Marylin Leinenbach, assistant professor of elementary education at ISU.

"Candy Factory," for teachers of students in grades K-2. A model of a candy factory will be used to help young children understand place value. This is a fun, hands-on activity. The presenter will be Elizabeth Brown, assistant professor in math and computer science at ISU.
