Tom Sauer named dean of Arts and Sciences

February 27 2007

After twice serving as interim dean of Indiana State University's College of Arts and Sciences, Tom Sauer will assume the position of dean, effective July 1.

"I am excited that Tom Sauer will be our dean of Arts and Sciences, C. Jack Maynard, the university's provost and vice president for academic affairs, said Tuesday (Feb. 27) in announcing the appointment.

"Tom has the respect of everyone on this campus. He has developed that respect through hard work, through building relationships across the university, and through his efforts to continually advance the critical role of a liberal education in today's modern university. His leadership will be critical as the university responds to the numerous challenges that we will address in the coming years," Maynard said.

An associate professor of English and associate dean at Indiana State since 1990, Sauer has been interim dean of Arts and Sciences since 2005 and also served in the same position during the 2001-02 academic year.

"I have had the privilege of teaching world literature and Shakespeare and carrying out various academic administrative duties in Arts and Sciences for over 16 years, and am honored by the confidence that Provost Maynard and the faculty, staff, and students of the College have expressed in me with the appointment as dean," Sauer said. "I am looking forward to working with all segments of the ISU community to strengthen the liberal arts and sciences on campus and thereby enhance the contributions of the College and ISU to the common good."

With 22 academic departments, 13 interdisciplinary and pre-professional programs, and three research centers, Arts and Sciences is the largest of Indiana State's six colleges, serving nearly 4,000 undergraduate and graduate students.

Sauer holds both a master's degree and a Ph.D. in comparative literature from Indiana University as well as a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Notre Dame.

Prior to coming to Indiana State, he served as associate director of the Indiana Humanities Project for the Indiana Department of Public Instruction, assistant professor of German at the State University College of New York at Fredonia, assistant professor of Germanic languages and literature at the University of Virginia, and also at Virginia assistant dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.
