ISU and Iowa Wesleyan College Choirs to perform March 16

March 13 2007

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Indiana State University Department of Music will present an outstanding evening of choral music beginning at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 16, at Centenary United Methodist Church.

The concert will feature the combined efforts of the ISU Concert Choir and the choir from Iowa Wesleyan College. Affiliated with the United Methodist Church, Iowa Wesleyan College is the oldest church-related college west of the Mississippi River. The performance in Terre Haute is part of a week-long concert tour under the direction of Jamie Spillane, the school’s director of choral activities. A long time friend of ISU choral director, Scott Buchanan, Spillane continues the rich choral music tradition at the college.

“I was thrilled when Jamie called me and told me he wanted to stop here in Terre Haute to perform,” Buchanan said. “We have been friends for quite awhile and it will be wonderful to see him work with his students. My students are excited about the opportunity to perform in a joint concert like this,” he added.

Friday’s program will include repertoire spanning six centuries of choral music, from the Renaissance all the way to 21st century vocal jazz arrangements. Selections by Gibbons, Schubert, Rachmaninoff, Haydn, Hovland, Wilberg, and others will be among the works performed.

“It is going to be a fun night,” Buchanan said. “We’ll sing for them. They’ll sing for us. And then we’ll do a couple of pieces together. Then on Saturday morning, Jamie and I will conduct clinics for each other’s group. It is a great opportunity for both choirs.”

The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the music department at (812) 237-2772 or visit the department's web site at http://www.indstate.edu/music .
