April 3 2007

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The world-famous Bread and Puppet Theater Company will bring fun, humor and a carnival setting to Terre Haute with a performance at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, April 15 in the Hulman Center.

This show, "Everything is Fine Circus," will feature live performers -- some masked, some not - mixed with puppets employing the Bread and Puppet Theater's characteristic brand of broad clownish farce. Touching lightly on current political and social issues, the show is presented in a way that the whole family can appreciate and enjoy.

This extraordinary company's innovative use of puppets, physical-style performance and populist theater techniques have made them legendary throughout the theater world.

Members of FUSION, the theater-dance company affiliated with the ISU theater department, will participate in the "Everything is Fine Circus" as part of the supporting cast. These ISU theater and dance students will learn, firsthand, many of the performance techniques made famous by this celebrated company.

Bread and Puppet is one of the country's oldest and most successful alternative theater groups. Founded in the early 1960's by German-born sculptor Peter Schumann, the group has performed in Europe and Latin America as well as the United States.

Bread and Puppet has been a consistent and firm supporter of issues of human rights, universal justice and feeding the poor as exemplified by their tradition of serving the audience their own homemade bread after each performance. This show is part of the lead-up to Human Rights Day to be held on Wednesday, April 18 at Indiana State. Bread and Puppet has been committed to freedom of speech and expression, this year's theme for Human Rights Day, throughout its existence.
