Politics moves quickly at Hoosier Boys State, the annual exercise in democracy and civic involvement sponsored by the American Legion Department of Indiana.
Following a primary election on Tuesday (June 12), the parties showed support for their gubernatorial candidates at a political rally Tuesday night, where the candidates introduced themselves to Boys State attendees.
A debate was conducted Wednesday morning (June 13) between the candidates for governor and lieutenant governor, and balloting in the general election began at 11 a.m.
Results of the voting were announced shortly thereafter, with Chernoskutov, choice of the Nationalist Party, defeating Federalist candidate Grayson Swaim of Camby, a student at Mooresville High School.
Just hours later, Chernoskutov was sworn in as governor of the 70th Hoosier Boys State. Chernoskutov will attend Boys Nation in Washington, D.C., at the end of July, and will receive scholarships totaling $1,000, which he can use toward college.
Other Boys State officers elected Wednesday:
Secretary of State, Todd Smith, Shelbyville, Shelbyville High School
Attorney General, Johnnie Long, Knightstown, Morton Memorial High School
Treasurer, Artis Hailey, Hammond, Hammond High School
Auditor of State, Reid Dickerson, Indianapolis, North Central High School
Superintendent of Public Instruction, Christopher Kleckner, Indianapolis, North Central High School
Hoosier Boys State activities continue on the Indiana State campus through Saturday, when more than 600 delegates return home and the girls take over for the 66th Hoosier Girls State, June 17-23, sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary.
