August 10 2007

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Sycamore Service Corps and Midwest Campus Compact Citizen-Scholar Fellowship Program, local programs of AmeriCorps comprised of local residents and students from the Wabash Valley’s higher education institutions are looking for volunteers to serve non-profit organizations in the Wabash Valley.

The AmeriCorps Sycamore Service Corps and the Citizen-Scholar Fellowship, both coordinated by Indiana State University’s Center for Public Service and Community Engagement, are programs of our nation’s domestic service corps that address community needs in education, public safety, human services, and the environment while allowing volunteers to earn compensation and an educational award.

Members agree to serve 300, 450, or 675 hours of service within an 11-month or less time frame. Both programs serve non-profit agencies in Clay, Parke, Sullivan, Vermillion, and Vigo counties.

Applicants accepted into either program become AmeriCorps members. Most positions provide a monthly living allowance. Upon completion of service, all members receive an educational award of between $1,000 and $1,800, provided by the Corporation for National and Community Service.

AmeriCorps members must be U.S. Citizens or lawful permanent residents of the U.S. and at least 18 years of age.

Volunteers also learn new skills, develop leadership skills and gain a sense of satisfaction from making a difference in their communities.

“The Sycamore Service Corps AmeriCorps and the Midwest Campus Compact Citizen-Scholar Fellowship Programs are a great opportunity for local residents or students to provide meaningful service to non-profit agencies and to make a difference in the community. A variety of positions are available such as tutoring children, mentoring and leading youth programs and activities, and assisting families in locating needed resources,” said Debbie Miller, director of AmeriCorps Programs at ISU.

AmeriCorps members receive excellent professional development and ongoing training as well as the opportunity to attend state events with AmeriCorps members from across the state of Indiana, Miller added.

The Sycamore Service Corps and Midwest Campus Compact Citizen-Scholar Fellowship Program are part of the National Service. The Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives oversee the local Program.

Applications are now being accepted for the 2007-2008 AmeriCorps Programs. For more information or to download the application, go to http://www.indstate.edu/publicservice/students/americorps . For more information, call Debbie Miller at (812) 237-7900.
