The three-day forum includes keynote speakers, workshops, specialized breakout sessions and career strategies forums. Keynote speakers will include presentations on the economy, markets, Federal Reserve perspective, corporate governance and responsibility, and leadership. Specialized breakout sessions will cover topics such as fixed income, hedge funds, international markets, and risk management.
“The RISE VIII Forum is a once in a lifetime opportunity for students to learn from and network with leading executives and Wall Street experts,†Rebecca Shorter, director of career development at the Gongaware Center in ISU’s College of Business, said. “The interactive learning environment allows students to excel and foster an interest in Financial Services, specifically in the capital markets and asset management areas,â€
A forum on career strategies will offer an excellent opportunity for students to better understand and explore careers in the area of capital markets and asset management, Shorter said.
“In addition to the variety of speakers, workshops, and breakout sessions, students will have an opportunity to network with industry professionals during a networking reception. Students will also have an opportunity to become a part of history when the NASDAQ remote closing bell ceremony takes place on Thursday during the forum. R.I.S.E VIII will be a fun, exciting, and educational experience for all students involved,†she said.
Indiana State students attending the event include seniors Mansour Alturki and Hani Singer, both of Terre Haute. Alturki is vice president of the Student Investment Club while Singer is president-elect of the club, which manages two portfolios valued at approximately $450,000.
“We are looking forward to gaining experience and knowledge from all the different experts at the conference. With such financially turbulent times upon us, this is a great opportunity to be able to obtain advice from the best experts in the field,†Alturki said.
“What we learn at the conference will be brought back and used by the Investment Club to manage our portfolios. I believe the knowledge we gain from the RISE conference will reflect positively on our investment strategy here at ISU and will result in better portfolio performance overall,†he said.
"I hope to meet some of the keynote speakers and get to know how they base their decisions and what they think is important for someone to make it in the investment industry. It's just the kind of thing that you cannot learn from textbooks," Singer said.
Other members of the ISU delegation are sophomore Tony Askins of Shelbyville, Ill.; sophomore Jeremy Firster of Elizabeth; freshman Alyse Houghton of Plymouth; freshman Charles Kays of Columbus; senior Imane Lahlou of Casablanca, Morocco; and sophomore Nathan Lloyd of North Liberty.
The financial services program at Indiana State has been recognized by the university as one of two Programs of National Distinction as part of an initiative funded in part by the Lilly Endowment to strengthen selected academic programs.
