Outgoing Indiana Higher Education Commissioner Stan Jones received one of Indiana State University's most prestigious awards Wednesday (April 22).

University President Daniel J. Bradley presented Jones with the President's Award for Distinguished Public Service and Outstanding Achievement, an award presented only seven times previously since its creation in 1973.

The presentation followed a campus-wide address by Jones titled "Serving the Disadvantaged and At-Risk College Student: Higher Education's Responsibilities in Tough Economic Times."

When Jones steps down April 30, he will end 35 years of service to Indiana, including 16 years as a legislator, five years as an aide to Gov. Evan Bayh and the past 14 years as higher education commissioner. During that time, his passion has been a driving force behind such programs as 21st Century Scholars, the community college system, the Education Roundtable and the Core 40 high school curriculum, Bradley noted.

"In many ways, Indiana State University's mission and the vision of Commissioner Jones are one and the same. We believe that all students should have an opportunity to succeed," Bradley said.

"He leaves behind a tremendous legacy that has helped transform many a student's life while also serving the needs of our state. However, his passion and advocacy for helping students succeed is not something he will leave behind. The impact he has had on our state will now be felt on a national level," Bradley said.

Jones will lead a new national organization designed to increase college graduation rates among at-risk student populations.

"I am surprised and honored to receive the ISU President's Award and be in such elite company," Jones said. "I'm also pleased to be able to come to the campus and talk with students and faculty."

Previous recipients of the Indiana State University President's Award have included Tony and Mary Hulman, owners of Hulman & Co. and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway; entertainers Bob Hope and Doc Severinson; legendary college basketball coach John Wooden, who began his college career at Indiana State; former NBA coach John MacLeod; and Olympic athletes Larry Bird and Bruce Baumgartner.
