An Indiana State University professor emeritus of education will be honored with the Distinguished Teacher Educator Award from the Association of Teacher Educators at the national conference in Orlando on Feb. 15.
Marvin Henry served as a professor, supervisor of student teachers, director of student teaching and department chair in teacher education at Indiana State from 1959 to 1995.
"It was a surprise and honor to be recognized by my peers throughout the country," Henry said.
The Distinguished Teacher Educator Award recognizes and honors individuals in higher education or state departments of education who have advanced the profession of teacher education and have been a member of the Association of Teacher Educators for a minimum of seven years.
Henry has been a member of the Association of Teacher Educators for several decades, which he said contributed to his success as a teacher educator.
"Through [Association for Student Teachers] and eventually [Association for Teacher Educators] I was able to become a more effective teacher educator," Henry said.
He was named a distinguished member of the Association of Teacher Educators in 1984 after serving as president of the organization in 1977-1978. In his role as president, he helped establish the journal "Action in Teacher Education."
Henry served as chairman of the Indiana Teacher Education Advisory Council and as a member of the Teacher Training and Licensing Advisory Committee.
In 1986, Henry received a grant to develop a model teacher induction program, called Project CREDIT, which provided a multiple support system for first-year teachers. This program was named ATE's Distinguished Program in Teacher Education in 1988 because of its success in teacher retention.
Henry co-authored the book, "Supervising Student Teachers the Professional Way," which is now in its seventh edition and has been used by more than 250 institutions as a text for the supervision of student teachers.
Before he retired, Henry served as chairperson for the curriculum, instruction and media technology department at Indiana State.
