ISU graduate finalist for Teacher of the Year

November 2, 2012

Tony Bennett, Superintendent of Public Instruction, announced the 10 finalists for the 2013 Teacher of the Year, one of them being an ISU alumna.

"These finalists represent the talent and dedication illustrated by teachers throughout Indiana," Bennett said in a press release.

Marianne Mazely-Allen, one of the finalists and an Indiana State University graduate, teaches English for grades 10-12 at Terre Haute North Vigo High School.

"To be a finalist is a great opportunity to represent the teachers of Vigo County. Some of the best teachers in the nation are right here in Vigo County, and I am honored to teach with them," said Mazely-Allen.

All finalists had to submit portfolios describing their teaching values and accomplishments. Throughout the year, they will be interviewed by past winners and education stakeholders. One finalist will represent Indiana at the National Teacher of the Year in Washington, D.C this spring.

Mazely-Allen has been teaching for over 30 years. She started in Columbus, Ind., and has worked in other areas of Indiana and in Delaware.

"I love helping other people. It is rewarding to see my students succeed and achieve their goals inside the classroom as well as after they graduate," said Mazely-Allen. "I love to analyze the English language and to study effective communication. I also love to teach grammar. When students come back to visit, it is exciting to hear everything they have accomplished."

Mazely-Allen graduated from Indiana State University with an M.Ed. and a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction.

"One thing people asked me after I received my Ph.D. is why I didn't teach at the college level. I opted to teach high school students because they openly receive the education that you put forth for them and are eager to learn," said Mazely-Allen.

This past October a banquet in Indianapolis honored all the teachers who were nominated and the 2013 winner Suzanne Whitton.
