Respondus LockDown Browser

What is Respondus LockDown Browser?
Respondus LockDown Browser is a tool that allows a user to access a web site while preventing any other use of the computer. While using the LockDown Browser, all other applications are disabled.

Many professors will set up exams that require the use of LockDown Browser as a security measure.

How do I get and install the LockDown browser?
Download the LockDown Browser from the ISU website located at in the "Blackboard Plugins" section. When you click the link, you will be prompted to log in with your Sycamore username and password. After you log in you will see a link to download the file.

Once the file is downloaded to your computer, simply double click the file and follow the instructions.

How do I take a quiz using Respondus LockDown Browser?

  • Verify that you have a stable, high-speed internet connection.
  • Close all applications on your computer, including any "background" programs that will attempt to access the internet (e.g. chatting, weather tools.)
  • Open the LockDown Browser.
  • Go to and login.
  • Navigate to your exam and click "Begin."
  • Make sure to regularly save your progress during the course of the exam and to submit at the end of the exam.
  • Close the LockDown Browser after the exam is submitted.

Will the LockDown Browser cause any problems with my computer?
When the LockDown Browser closes it will reset all of the settings on the computer to function normally. However, if a computer experiences an unexpected shutdown, or if the browser is closed through the task manager, this step will be skipped. This will cause some of the functionality of the Start Menu to be disabled. Opening the LockDown Browser and closing it again will fix any issues.
