What is an RCC?
An RCC is a Residence Hall student, with above
average knowledge of general computing software, Windows operating
system. Cisco Clean Access (CCA) and networking, that enjoys helping
other students.
ISU provides each Residence Hall resident a
network connection in his or her room. Along with the network
connection, technical assistance is offered to any Residence Hall
student that needs help. The Residential Computing Consultant (RCC)
is the primary provider of this assistance that is currently limited
to support of computers running the MacOS and Windows 2000/XP
operating systems. We do not attempt to support other operating
systems such as Windows NT or Linux. The assistance is rendered in
the form of visiting residence hall student’s rooms by appointment
and service hours in the lounge of the residence hall they support.
The RCC needs to be very familiar with the basic
Office of Information Technology (OIT) installation procedures for
the supported operating systems. These procedures are provided in
their Student Technology Guide, which is given to every ISU student.
Included with the guide is a CD that contains updates for supported
operating systems. RCCs should make note of any errors or other
problems that they encounter with these procedures and share them
with their supervisor.
- All ISU students living in a Residence Hall are
welcome to apply for the RCC positions
- All RCCs must be registered students in good
academic standing
- Candidates will be considered to be on academic
probation if they have less than
a 2.00 GPA. They will no longer be considered for an RCC
position and will be asked to step down if they are placed on
academic probation while serving as an RCC.
- Candidates must be of good conduct standing with
the University at the time of application or appointment.
- If a University policy violation takes place
while serving as a RCC, the employment status will be reviewed with
the appropriate staff, RCC Project Manager, and others involved with
the violation and disciplinary action up to and including
termination could be applied. Violations are also subject to the
University Student Code of Conduct and could be referred to Student
Judicial Programs.
- RCCs will receive a leased laptop for their use
while employed with OIT. The RCC is responsible for the laptop and
must return it at the end of Spring Semester or if their employment
ends.
RCC Policy
- An RCC is required to live in the residence hall
that he or she serves. If an RCC moves off campus or to a different
hall, he or she will be terminated since they are ineligible to
continue employment as an RCC.
- All RCCs are expected to obtain an OIT picture ID
and wear it while on duty.
- RCCs are expected to return to campus up to one
week early in the fall. The exact training schedule will be
determined at a later date and given to them upon acceptance of the
position. The residence halls will accommodate their early arrival.
During this time, RCCs are expected to attend training and
orientation sessions and begin helping students that arrive early.
- RCCs must commit to work through the last day of
finals each semester.
- The most critical time for an RCC is during the
weekend prior to the beginning and the first week of the fall
semester. All RCCs are required to be present in their residence
hall, actively assisting students, during the first weekend. This is
when most Residence Hall Students will need their assistance.
- RCCs are expected to attend the 1st floor meeting
for their hall and monthly residential hall meetings for staff as
scheduled by Residential Life.
- RCCs will receive an hourly wage of $8.00 per
hour. Hours vary during the semester startup. After the semester
startup, work hours are limited to 10 hours per week.
- Additional job opportunities may be available for
RCCs once their peak time ends. These additional jobs outside of the
RCC can only be 10 hours a week and cannot interfere with the
primary job of RCC. The additional job opportunities hourly wage
will be determined by the employer. This time must be separate from
the 10 hours they need to log each week for their RCC position.
- NOTE: There is a position that will be serving
University Apartments. The qualifications and requirements are the
same. However, the time requirements and services provided will be a
little different. This will be discussed thoroughly with the student
chosen for that position.
Semester Startup
- The demand for an RCC's time peaks during the
first week of each semester (especially the fall semester) then
gradually tapers off over the next couple of months.
- During opening weekend, appointments and
service hours are waived.
- In addition to the weekend prior to the
beginning of fall classes, the first few weeks of each semester
will be periods of high demand for the services of an RCC.
- An RCC must be able to manage his/her time
efficiently and not neglect his/her class work during this peak
time.
Normal Hours
- During the months following semester startup,
RCCs are expected to work a maximum of 10 hours per week. Work
hours are typically derived from two sources:
- Appointments with Residential Life
residents. These hours are scheduled by the RCC as needed.
Appointments are reported via status reports created by
filling in a Parature ticket or when the student calls the
help desk. A log will also be kept using webforms of
problems encountered that have been handled through e-mails.
- Service Hours in Lounge will be when the
RCC will be available for general questions each week from
Residence Hall students. This should be a set time that will
be made available to the students of the hall they support
when they check in their halls each semester and on the
Residential Life and RCC web pages. Students are expected to
keep these hours. If there are any changes, they must be
approved by the RCC Project manager.
- RCC’s time is considered “off duty” when they
do not have appointments or service hours scheduled. Residence
Hall Students should never bring their computer to the RCC’s
room nor should the RCC accept the computer or work on it in
their room. RCC’s are students first.
Projects
- RCCs will participate in Residential Life
projects such as group presentations or documentation of
programs and/ or procedures depending upon their abilities and
interests.
- Two projects are required each semester.
- The projects must be approved by the RCC
Project Manager.
- Project opportunities include the following:
- Group Presentations for Residence Hall
students
- Documentation of programs or procedures
- Other projects, as requested by OIT
- RCCs provide technical assistance to residence
hall students; however, the student is ultimately responsible for
the functionality of his/her hardware and software.
- RCCs are not expected to answer questions that
are not related to Residential Life student’s basic computer setup
and troubleshooting. Also, they do not work on any ISU owned
computers.
- RCCs are expected to introduce new students to
ISU’s computing resources.
- Other duties such as assisting in creating
articles for the RCC web site, documentation of procedures, and
development of new RCC services and support guidelines.
- RCCs do not install hardware. An RCC NEVER opens
the case of a Residence Hall student’s computer for any reason.
Doing so is considered grounds for termination - no exceptions!
- RCCs only install software that is directly
responsible for the setup of the residence hall student’s computer
for use in the Residence Hall. This software is on the CD given to
each resident along with the Student Technology Guide. Any
