Background:
UNIX servers run a number of critical infrastructure services. These services include web servers, external mail transport gateways, proxy service, DNS service, DHCP service, multimedia streaming services, Portal services, etc.
While these servers are known to run for years, without interruption, occasional maintenance is sometimes necessary. Also, while the servers themselves may run for years, the applications running on those servers are often times not written with the same level of performance in mind and occasionally need to be restarted to prevent an unscheduled failure.
