Frequently Asked Questions for Minimum Password Requirement

1 -- What are the minimum requirements for strong passwords?

·         Password minimum length is 8 characters (maximum of 16 characters)

·         Password must contain at least one numeric character 

·         Password must contain at least one uppercase character 

·         Password must contain at least one lowercase character 

·         Password must be changed every 180 days

2 -- Where do I change my password?

To change your password go to https://myisu.indstate.edu and select the "Forgot/Change Your Password?" under the login box, then follow the prompts. You will be asked to answer your secret questions after entering your Sycamore Login and then you can change your password. If you cannot remember your answers or have not input your secret questions and answers, you will need to contact the Help Desk at x2910.

3 -- Why did the “Windows Workstation” box come up now that I changed my password?

Because you have changed your password in the Portal you must now synch your Novell password with your Windows workstation password. To do this check the box that reads “Change your Windows password to match your Novell password after a successful login.”, then type in your old password and hit enter. This will synch the Novell and workstation passwords and you will not see this box again until you change it again.

4 -- What applications does this password synch to?

MyISU (including Banner Self Service), Exchange, Netware, Blackboard, Cisco Clean Access, WPA, ISECURE, and the library EZ Proxy System  

5 -- What happens if I can’t remember my password after I change it?

6 -- What happens if I enter my password wrong five times in a row?

Your accounts will be locked and you will need to contact the Help Desk at x2910.

7 -- How soon can I reuse a previous password?

You will not be able to reuse a password for one year. You must use a password for 24 hours before you can create a new one.

8 -- How often do I have to change my password?

You will be prompted to change your password every 180 days.

9 -- What happens if I do not change my password after 180 days?

You will be able to login at least one additional time (grace login) and then you will be unable to login.  You can use the “Forgot/Change Your Password” link.  If this does not work, contact the Help Desk at x2910.

10 -- Do I have to use a special character?

 No. You can only use a few of special characters due to incompatibilities with ISU internal systems. You should not use Space # ~ ^ *? , : ; | " < >@$& () <>' =

11 -- Can my password contain my username?

 No. You cannot include your username as part of your password.
