Windows CuteFTP32 Help Page

This page is for CuteFTP32 version 1.8, other versions may differ slightly.

Setting up CuteFTP:

  1. Double-click on the CuteFTP32 icon to open CuteFTP and transfer files
    A window with heading the "FTP Site Manager" appears as shown below :

  1. Click on the "Exit" button (circled in red in the image) to close the Site Manager.
    You will see the following window :

Click on FTP on the menu bar, select Settings and then Options.
The options box should appear as seen here :

Now make sure the General tab is selected (circled in image) and select Quick Connect from the Start drop-down menu. Then click OK.

Using Cute FTP:

You should be back at the main CuteFTP32 window now. From now on, when you start CuteFTP, it will come up in Quick Connect mode, but until you restart the program, the new settings haven't taken effect, so you can click on the button that looks like a lightning bolt (look at image of toolbar below).


Then, a window appears with the heading Quick Connect as shown below:


  1. In this window fill in the following (circled in image below):
    • Under the Host Address option type your FTP site address. This is where you will be transfering files, for example: web.indstate.edu
    • Your User ID
    • Your password

Click on OK.

Click OK

Now a window with the heading CuteFTP 1.8 appears as shown below:



This window has two divisions with a list of files, the one on the right side is the remote directory and the one on the left is local directory.

The remote directory is the directory in the web site you have made your connection to, such as web.indstate.edu or sapphire.indstate.edu.

The local directory can be a directory on your computer's hard drive or floppy drive. It can be even your local network account ( example : F:\kenb ) if you are logged in to your network account. To transfer files from your local network account (Example: coral or amber or ruby ) , you have to be logged in your network account.

To download or upload files:

  1. Select the desired file using the mouse.

    To change directories, delete file(s), rename file(s) and to make new directories click on the Command option from the menu.
  2. Go to the menu and select the Command option.
  3. Under the Command pull down menu, select Upload or Download option to transfer file(s) as per requirement. For instance, select upload option to transfer files into your web account (Example: sapphire.indstate.edu or web.indstate.edu). Or select download option to transfer files into your computer's hard drive, floppy drive or your local network account(Example: coral or amber )
  4. Note: File(s) can also be uploaded or downloaded by selecting file(s) by using the mouse and keeping the left mouse key depressed, dragging it to the list of local directory files or remote initial directory files as per requirement.

    To disconnect current connection or to make a new connection to a site, click on the FTP menu item and select Disconnect or Quick Connect option from this pull down menu.

    To exit this FTP program, click on FTP menu item and select Exit from the pull down menu.
