Modules Required for Certificate

While each lesson is designed to stand on its own and can be taken in any sequence, it is recommended that you take these lessons in the following order to better understand the compounding complexities of online course design and delivery. You must complete all four required lessons if you wish to earn the Online Teaching Certificate.

• Federal Regulations Related to Online Teaching – Identify the legal differences between face-to-face, online, and correspondence education. Learn how to implement regular and substantive interaction in meaningful ways.
• Developing Measurable Learning Objectives – Craft meaningful and measurable learning goals for your course and modules.
• Creating Meaningful Assessments for Online Learners – Will help you select, design, and refine your assessments so that your evaluation methods meet your intended goals.
• Instructor Presence in the Online Classroom – Explore ways to increase your cognitive, teaching, and social presence in your online courses to advance interaction, motivation, and retention.

Elective Modules

These lessons may be completed in any order. You must complete at least four electives if you wish to earn the Online Teaching Certificate. They are alphabetized for your convenience.

• Academic Honesty and Proctoring in Online Courses – Review University expectations related to academic honesty procedures and discover resources to assist in deterrence of academic dishonesty.
• Adhering to Copyright in an Online Course – Defines the legalities related to copyright in online courses and introduces you to Creative Commons in order to locate free, meaningful digital resources.
• Best Practices for Instructional Videos – Focuses on the various types of instructional videos, their purpose and benefits, and how you can generate effective instructional videos.
• Conducting Group Work Online – Explores the value of online cooperative and collaborative learning and offers tips for best practice as well as suggested, supporting technologies.
• Creating Accessible Course Content – Summarizes the rationale behind accessibility and universal design and shares practical tips for creating accessible course materials.
• Customizing and Organizing Your Canvas Course Site – Learn about best practices related to course structure, navigation, and content organization, including modular design.
• Developing a Meaningful and Engaging Syllabus – Explore required and recommended policies and procedures to include your syllabus. While this lesson primarily addresses online courses, it can also be applied to face-to-face and hybrid teaching environments.
• Effective Instructional Strategies for Teaching Statistics Online – Learn best practice methods and tips for teaching statistics in an online environment.
• Employing Meaningful Course Materials – Learn best practices related to selecting and deploying course materials, such as textbooks, videos, and web links.
• Engaging Online Learners with Commonly Used Canvas Tools – Discover best practices and helpful tips for the most commonly used tools in Canvas.
• Managing Your Teaching Workload as an Online Instructor – This lesson presents several strategies and tools to help you better manage your online teaching workload through sound course design and efficient grading.
• Teaching Tips for Engaging Diverse Learners – Learn about the online student population at Indiana State as well as practical tips for meeting their unique needs.
• Using University Resources in Your Online Course – This lesson identifies several University resources you can use to enhance your online courses, including student services, a Canvas template, and other essential resources.
• Utilizing Synchronous Sessions in Your Online Course – Learn to effectively and efficiently conduct live, synchronous web conferences with your learners.
