Indiana State University is committed to parents and families as valued partners in each student's educational progress.
Our services and programs are designed to help you support your student's growth, personal development, and overall success—beginning as a prospective student and continuing throughout the first year. Whether you live across town or halfway around the globe, we will engage you in the University experience while fostering your student's independence.
Freshman orientation is for parent and families as well as students. Our program provides parents and families with a better understanding of the University environment and services, enhances parental awareness of issues facing college students, and provides information on opportunities that enable parents and families to support and interact with their sons and daughters while attending Indiana State University.
Each admitted student is sent an invitation to attend New Student Orientation with a checklist of items to complete (see link below). Review this checklist with your student before orientation and prepare any questions you might have about the items.
During orientation, sessions are broken up in several formats, including students only, parents and families only, by academic college, and in breakout sessions. It is highly suggested that family members and students discuss academic expectations prior to arriving to orientation. We have provided a worksheet for students to complete before attending with coursework they are hoping to complete during their first semester (see link below). Students will meet with an academic advisor on Day Two of the program and can present this worksheet to aid the conversation and scheduling of classes. Family members will not be with their student during academic advising.
