Institutional Policy Regarding
the use of Vertebrate Animals in Research or Teaching
The Animal Welfare Act Regulations (AWAR) and the Public Health Service Policy on Humane Care & Use of Laboratory Animals (PHS Policy) require all faculty, staff and students using vertebrate animals in research and/or teaching to secure Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) approval. In addition, all personnel involved in vertebrate animal care and use must complete IACUC training prior to initiating any work with these animals. Please note that it is the Principal Investigator’s responsibility to ensure that students and staff under his/her direction complete the required training.
Failure to obtain approval and/or to complete training will result in the deactivation of all associated grant/contract accounts until all approvals have been secured and personnel training completed.
IACUC protocol applications must be submitted via IRBNet. For assistance using IRBNet, call the Office of Sponsored Programs at (812) 237-3088.
