Mrs. Ruth Bain was a graduate of Indiana State and taught physical
education and health for more than 30 years in the public schools of
Evansville. She had outstanding programs in the schools where she
taught. She remembered the Physical Education staff at Indiana State as
having made great contributions to her professional career.
Criteria:
An Evansville graduating high school senior woman who is planning to go
to college to major in PE, or a recipient of the award who is enrolled
at ISU and satisfactorily pursues studies with a major in PE and is
seeking renewal of an award.
The Florence Curtis Memorial Scholarship in Physical Education is
made possible from a bequest by Miss Florence M. Curtis. Miss Curtis
served on the Indiana State University Faculty for 33 of her 44-year
career in education. She was a professor of Women's Physical Education
and served as Chairperson of the Department of Physical Education for
women. She retired from the ISU Faculty in 1957 and she passed away in
1972.
Criteria:
3.0 or better GPA, career in Physical Education, professional activities
and attributes and financial need (One or Two recipients)
This scholarship was established in 1984 by Miss Ruby J. East,
Associate Professor Emeritus of Women's Physical Education at Indiana
State University. She retired from the ISU faculty on August 31, 1965
completing 38 years of service.
Criteria:
1. A student beginning or continuing his/her education majoring in
physical education
2. Financial need
3. Academic Achievement.
The "I" Women's Memorial Scholarship was established in 1950 by the
alumnae in memory of "I" Women who were deceased. The purpose of the
scholarship is to provide financial aid (a minimum amount of $150.00)
and to encourage the development of a well-prepared teacher of physical
education with a variety of skills and interests.
Criteria:
The scholarship is to be awarded annually to a student who has completed
a minimum of 48 semester hours and is enrolled in Teacher Education in
the Department of Physical Education. The recipient will be selected on
the basis of skill, scholarship, service to the department, and
participation in campus activities.
The Eleanor Forsythe St. John Scholarship is in honor of Eleanor
Forsythe St. John. Dr. St. John was a 1935 graduate of Indiana State
University. She served on the ISU Faculty for 33 years, 1943-76, and was
Chairperson of the Department of Physical Education for Women for 16
years (1960 until her retirement in 1976).
Criteria:
A physical education major who has completed a minimum of 60 hours and
has a minimum GPA of 3.00; committment to a career in Teaching and shows
an active interest in athletics and sports for women.
Criteria:
Each recipient shall be an outstanding student enrolled in the
Department of Physical Education majoring in teacher preparation.
The student shall have a record of academic excellence as demonstrated
by a GPA of a minimum 3.0 on a 4 point scale. The application
process will be held each spring and the actual award given the
following fall. The recipient shall, upon application of the
award, have achieved junior class standing and must be of senior class
standing to actually receive the award. The recipient shall
demonstrate leadership abilities and active extra-curricular
participation. Preference shall be given to those applicants
deemed by the committee to have the greatest potential to be an
outstanding teacher. A commitment to students and the profession
is paramount in the selection process.
Criteria:
Recipient must be a full-time student who has a declared major in
physical education. First preference will be given to female
students. Recipient must be junior or senior status at the time
the scholarship is received and in good academic standing.
Recipient must be respected by the faculty and her/his peers in her/his
field and possess a strong commitment and work ethic to her/his studies.
The Paul L. Wolf Scholarship was established by friends of Paul Wolf
in recognition of his 42 years of service as a teacher and coach on the
Faculty of Indiana State University.
Criteria:
A physical education major who has completed a minimum of 31 hours.
Shows scholarship skill in a variety of activities and a desire to teach
physical education.
Criteria:
Recipient must be a full-time student in good academic standing,
majoring in physical education, with the desire to coach.
Preference will be given to student with an aquatics emphasis, WSI
certification, and/or has volunteered within Red Cross or equivalent
aquatics program.
