Philosophy Courses for SUMMER I                              5-WEEK June 6 – July 8 2005

PHIL 101 Introduction to Philosophy (GE’89:C3, GE2000:LAPS:E) 3 credit hours. MTWRF 11:30 – 1:20, S. Kim. In this course we shall examine four of our most fundamental beliefs about ourselves and the world: We know many things about the world and its inhabitants; our mind influences our body; we are free agents; and, our morality is not just a willy-nilly convention. This course is designed (1) to acquaint students with the important philosophical challenges these beliefs bring with them, (2) to help them explore how different philosophers attempted to meet these challenges, and (3) (perhaps most importantly) to engage students in a dialogue about what they should believe about themselves and the world.

PHIL 105 Introduction to Logic (GE’89:A3; GE2000:SMS:E) 3 credit hours; MTWRF 9:30 –11:20, S. Kim. The purpose of this Gen Ed course: To enable students 1) to understand and evaluate arguments that they encounter in textbooks, lectures, essays, and conversations; and 2) to express their critical reasoning clearly both orally and in writing.
