Dr. Mike Chambers co-led the biennial study trip to China with faculty from
Economics and Environmental Science. Fifteen students participated in the
trip, including four from the Poli Sci department. In addition to Beijing
and Shanghai, the study trip visited the Three Gorges region of the Yangzi
River and the cities of Dalian and Shenyang in northeast China. Dr. Alzugaray, a
Professor at the University of Havana and a former diplomat
in the Cuban foreign ministry, visited several classes and
delivered a public presentation on the Cuban revolution and
US-Cuban relations.
Margaret Robb, Chief Judge of the Indiana Court of Appeals, spoke to the
ISU community as part of the 2011 Constitution Day commemoration. Charlynn Turner, MPA '11, has been awarded a James H. Dunn Memorial
Fellowship to work in the Illinois governor's office during 2011-2012. Justin Todd (Poli Sci and Legal Studies double major, Civic Leadership
minor) was recently presented with the 2011 President’s Award for Civic and
Community Leadership for his work with new and prospective students as well
as the broader community. On March 24, 2011 the Indiana Court of Appeals made its annual visit to
Indiana State University to hear oral arguments in an appeals case. This
year’s case concerned a conviction on felony sexual battery charges. After
the oral arguments, the judges and lawyers answered questions from students. Sarah Christian, who graduated with a Legal Studies major in May 2010,
has been interning at the American University in Cairo and was witness to
the democracy movement in Egypt in January-February 2011. Michael Scott, Jr. adds the President’s Medal for Leadership,
Scholarship, and Service to his list of accolades Dr. Carl Klarner has revealed his forecast for the upcoming state legislative elections. The results of his forecast will be
published in the October 2010 issue of PS: Political Science and
Politics. Dr. Gaston Fernandez presented lectures on American democracy with Dr.
Richard Schneirov (Hist) at Liaoning University in Shenyang, China during a
week-long visit to ISU’s partner university. Meanwhile, Dr. Mike Chambers
led a two-week study tour of China for nine ISU students – including Poli
Sci students Matt Huckleby and Justin Todd.

Award from ISU Legal
Studies Senior Recognized for Civic & Community Engagement Analyssa Noe, a
Legal Studies major with minors in Civic Leadership and Women's Studies,
will receive the President's Award for Civic and Community Engagement at
the Winter 2009 Commencement ceremony. Indiana
Court of Appeals Visits ISU The Indiana
Court of Appeals visited ISU on October 20, 2009 as part of its "Appeals
on Wheels" program. Political
Science Students Serve at the Statehouse
Four political
science students served as legislative assistants during the 2009
session of the Indiana General Assembly. Students had the
opportunity to assist legislators with many components of the law making
process.
Poli Sci Provides Student, Alumni
Commencement Speakers Political Science was well represented on
the platform during the May 2009 ISU Commencement. Graduating Senior
Sadie May Davis was the student speaker, and Roger Schmelzer (B.S. '79,
MPA '81) was the alumni speaker. Davis also
received the Alan C. Rankin Distinguished Senior Award, and the John W.
Moore Award as Outstanding Senior President's Scholar.
