Be A Leader at ISU

Hobart Scales, Sophomore
Vice President, Student Government Association

Hobart Scales, Sophomore, Political Science Major Q: How did you first get involved in leadership activities at ISU?
A: Originally, I got involved in a campus organization, ISU College Republicans. It was there I took the Secretary position and SGA Speaking Seat Representative position. From there it made sense for me to move to SGA. I did so becoming the Student Senate Secretary. After one year, I was asked to run for Vice President. I did and I won.

Q: How easy was it for you to get involved at ISU?
A: It was really easy to get involved here at ISU. With over 200 student organizations on campus, there truly is a right fit for every student. Anyone wanting to get involved can easily do so.

Q: What have you learned from your leadership opportunities?
A: I have learned so much through my involvement here at ISU. The campus, community, ISU administration, and student body have all been introduced to me through SGA. My major is political science/legal studies so my involvement in student government has been an extension of the classroom.

Q: Was there a person or instance that sparked your interest in becoming a leader?
A: I donít think there was an exact moment. It has been a journey of discovery that led me to becoming Vice President. I had to learn about it myself. I think this campus has helped facilitate that journey.

Q: What advice would you give to prospective students on the importance of leadership or on being a leader at ISU?
A: First off, get involved. College isnít just about the classroom. College is the experience you have during your four years here. Involvement opens doors of learning and advancement. Also, leadership isnít birthed overnight. Leadership is a learned behavior therefore it takes time to perfect those skills related to leadership. Lastly, have fun. Finding the right fit for yourself is key. Find an organization that you can be comfortable in. If you donít enjoy ISU then you only have yourself to blame.
