End of Life Care
November is National Hospice Month.
The purpose of this conference is to discuss current issues in end
of life care from a variety of perspectives.
The focus for this years' conference will be:
Communication and End of Life Issues
Sessions will cover a variety of topics, including
communicating with patients and families about death and dying,
communication among health professionals working in various settings
where death and dying issues arise, and communicating across
cultures and faith traditions about end-of-life issues.
Continuing Education credits will be available for Physicians,
Nurses, Psychologists (State of Indiana license only), Social
Workers, Marriage & Family Therapists, and Mental Health Counselors.

attendance are also available upon request to clergy or other
professionals.
In addition, a
special set of morning sessions will be held for students in
medicine, nursing, social work, and clinical and counseling
psychology. these sessions may also be of interests to
students preparing for careers in the ministry or training to serve
as chaplains. The morning sessions will only be open to
students.

There is a
commitment fee of $10 for the conference. A light supper will be
provided. The 7pm lecture by Drs. Jan and Harry Keffer is free and
open to the public. You may register by mail or phone for the
afternoon conference. Make checks payable to Indiana State

Objectives
Conference participants will be able
to:
1. Assist
families to prepare for the last hours of life.
2. Discuss
medical options with patients and their families.
3. Understand
the lifestyle, cultural, and spiritual variations associated with
end of life care.
4. Understand
the stigmas associated with AIDS-related end of life issues.
5. Understand
the issues associated with the death of a colleague in a medical
setting.
6. Understand
the issues surrounding the death of a pre-mature infant or child.
7. Understand
how to discuss Near-Death Experiences with patients.
8. Understand
communication issues related to emergent and critical care.
9. Understand
how pastoral care providers can serve as the interface between
family and health care providers.

Description: Preparing self and others for the trajectory of care
at end of life. Both presenters have personal and professional
experiences in end of life decisions for parents and patients.
Continuing Education
Nursing—
4.3 contact hours will be awarded upon completion of this program.
Attendance for the entire
session and a completed evaluation form is necessary in order to
receive CE credit. The Continuing Nursing Education Program of
Indiana State University is nationally accredited as a provider of
continuing nursing education
by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on
Accreditation.
Social Sciences—This
workshop has been approved for a total of 4.25 CEH’s for LSWs, LCSWs,
LMFTs, and LMHCs. The Indiana Social Worker, Marriage and Family
Therapist and Mental Health Counselor Board has approved Indiana
State University to provide Category I Continuing Education for LSWs,
LCSWs, LMFTs, and LMHCs. However, licensees must judge the program’s
relevance to their professional practice. Attendance at the entire
session and a completed evaluation form are necessary to receive the
continuing education credit.
Physicians—Union
Hospital designates this educational activity for a maximum of 4 AMA
PRA Category 1 Credit(s) TM. Physicians should only
claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in
the activity. Union Hospital is accredited by the Indiana State
Medical Association to sponsor continuing medical education for
physicians.
Psychologists
- This activity will provide 4.25 hours of category 1 C.E's. The
Indiana State University Department of Psychology is an approved
provider recognized by the state of
Indiana to provide Continuing Education to Indiana Licensed
Psychologists.
