HEALING RHYTHMS:  a research CONFERENCE AND WORKSHOP ON MUSIC, MOVEMENT AND MEDITATION

A conference for scholars, practitioners, clergy & the general public

FRIDAY - SUNDAY, November 6-8, 2009
Indiana STATE UNIVERSITY, TERRE HAUTE, IN

Over the centuries, the world's great faith traditions have all developed practices designed to calm the mind and boy, facilitate contemplation or worship, and nurture spiritual development.  Some such practices involve stillness and quiet, while others employ various movements, breathing techniques, chants, or music.  Many of the practices developed in these religious contexts have been adopted and utilized in secular settings to nurture health in the mind  and body.  for example, positive effects have been demonstrated for mindfulness meditation, yoga, and other techniques.  However, while considerable research has been conducted on meditation and in the field of music therapy, until recently there has the effect of practices in combination (music and contemplation, movement and meditation, etc.) as well as the effects of contemplative, movement, and musical practices on the development of compassion and on spiritual experiences and growth.  The goal of this conference is bring together researchers, practitioners, and theorists from diverse fields including (but not limited to) medicine, psychology, biology, sociology, musicology, and theology.  As with our past conferences, we plan to offer sessions aimed at researchers, health care and mental health care providers, clergy, and the general public.

This conference will explore the role of music, movement and meditation, separately an in combination, as they may impact holistic health and spiritual growth.  Movement practices to be covered include tai chi, quigong, yoga, and walking a labyrinth.  the role of music in facilitating contemplative states and spiritual development will also be a focus.  sessions will include research presentations, applied workshops for healthcare providers and clergy, ad informational and practice sessions covering various traditions and techniques.
