A university-based Psy.D. Program, the
doctoral program in clinical psychology at ISU follows a
practitioner-scientist model of training and has been APA-accredited*
for more than 25 years. Our students are required to complete a
dissertation, thus we place somewhat more emphasis on research skills
than do some Psy.D. programs. Students
interested in a doctoral program that provides rigorous training in
clinical skills as well as research opportunities may be particularly
suited for our program.
The Psy.D. Program at ISU adheres to the
belief that thoughtful training in diversity issues is crucial in
developing a professional identity that values and pursues excellence in
clinical practice. In addition, we are committed to creating a
cultural of acceptance and inclusion that values the contribution of
diverse perspectives such as those influenced by gender, ethnicity,
race, culture, sexual orientation, age, religion, disability and
personal experience. The program strives to develop in our
students a professional identity grounded in an active sense of social
responsibility combined with an appreciation and respect of cultural and
individual differences.
Over the past 7 years, 87% of our students that have applied have been
"matched" with an APA approved internship; 92% of our students have
matched with an APPIC member internship (based on 53 students applying
for internships through APPIC between 2005 - 2011).
We currently have seven clinical and five experimental faculty members
that teach in the Psy.D. program. In
addition, the director of our Psychology Clinic is a licensed
psychologist and teaches in the Psy.D. program. Please click to learn more about the research interests of
our
clinical faculty and
experimental faculty.
We have approximately 30-35 students on campus each year (1st-4th year students, 7-9 per cohort) and 7-9 students on internship. Over the past seven years, 85% of our students have been successful in obtaining an internship, most at APA-accredited sites. Our students come from a variety of backgrounds and from many different parts of the US. Almost all students have a bachelor's degree in psychology and typically 1-2 students each year enter with a master's degree or having completed some graduate coursework.
