ISU Journey Youth Work Fellowship Program

PRIMARY PROGRAM COMPONENTS


A Fall semester retreat with the following objectives:

  1. Help students become grounded in who they are and how this connects to youth development work.
  2. Introduce students to the ISU Journey program (also recruitment)
  3. Inspire student’s beliefs about what they can accomplish on behalf of youth.
  4. Provide prospective ISU Journey Fellows to begin networking with each other, faculty and community partners.
  5. Initiate student organization for the year.

Fellowship Application

  1. Application process begins as one of the final Fall Retreat components.
  2. Application form and interview.
  3. Criteria include sophomore or higher standing, minimum GPA of 2.5 and a demonstrated commitment to youth work.

Student Fellow monthly activities

  1. Student organization meetings.
  2. Student organization activities (service projects, speakers, site visits, workshops, etc.)
  3. Program field trips.
  4. Career Center events.
  5. Minimum of one state or regional workshop or conference.

Student Fellow service-learning pre-internship experiences

  1. Complete a community-service plan prior to starting hours that will follow guidelines provided by leadership team. Plans will be reviewed by advisors or leadership team members.
  2. Students will keep a journal of their experiences.
  3. Guided reflection about these experiences at monthly meetings.

A Spring semester retreat

  1. Presentation of projects and sharing of experiences.
  2. Personal growth activities.
  3. Reflection on past academic year.
  4. Internship preparations.
  5. Final organization meeting.

Internship during summer term within discipline area with youth service agency or within an agency that has a substantial youth service component

  1. Guidelines will be provided in addition to those in place within the student’s major.
  2. University faculty supervisor in each student’s major will oversee placement and progress of the internship, providing the student feedback and support necessary for a successful experience.

Internship reflection and program evaluation

  1. A half-day faculty-led retreat that will guide student’s in a reflection on their internship and evaluation of the ISU Journey program.

Students and faculty, with direction from career center staff, will discuss job opportunities, application process, interviewing and succeeding in the job.
