Policy
on Required Practicum Hours
The
pre-internship practicum in Recreation and Sport Management is intended to provide
students with applied experiences that help them (a) understand concepts in the
discipline, (b) explore their compatibility with specific career options, (c)
develop skills, (d) develop professional behavior, and (e) prepare for the
internship experience.
All
students majoring in Recreation and Sport Management are required to complete a
set of practicum experiences prior to enrolling in RCSM 490 or 491, the
Recreation and Sport Management Internship. The practicum requirements are as
follows:
1.
Total number of required
practicum hours is 280.
2.
All practicum sites must
be pre-approved by students’ advisors.
1.
Sites found in the
Internship Sites files, on the department web site, and in the Volunteer Sites
files are approved. New sites must be evaluated by the student’s advisor.
3.
The maximum number of
hours at a single facility is 200 unless otherwise indicated by your advisor or
program area.
4.
All hours must be
documented on forms provided by the Department. Documentation will include:
1.
Dates and number of
hours per day
2.
Name and type of
facility
3.
Programs involved in and
duties
4.
Supervisor’s name,
signature, title, and phone number.
5.
The student is
responsible for meeting the practicum requirement. All documentation must be on
file with the department.
6.
All students majoring in
Recreation and Sport Management will complete initial practicum requirements
according to the following schedule:
1.
40 hours in RCSM 136
2.
40 hours in RCSM 236
Not meeting the practicum requirement will
result in a grade of Incomplete for the class.
7.
Students entering the
Junior year must have completed 80 volunteer hours. The remaining 200
practicum hours will be completed according to schedules and parameters
established within the student’s emphasis.
8.
This policy is effective
with all students entering the Recreation and Sport Management major in the
Fall semester of 2000 and beyond.
