Communities

The Aviation Living-Learning Community is focused on helping students successfully transition into the aviation program by building relationships with their peers and the aviation faculty members. Students who belong to the community will take a major-related course together in the Fall Semester, and another major related course in the Spring Semester. Additionally, the LLC members will have more access to aviation faculty, advisors, and there will be unique experiences only available to students within the community.

The Business LLC is designed to serve Scott College of Business students pursuing any field of study. The college offers ten different majors and is open to students seeking to enhance their passion for business. Business LLC residents benefit from special events, guest speakers, and resources to strengthen their development as future professionals.

Can you make a cement canoe float? Ever thought about building your professor their very own desk made out of corrugate? How about designing a state of the art building? This is the community for you. Students in the Bailey College of Engineering and Technology community will take their classroom studies and apply them in unique ways with events on their floor and in the residence hall. Many students participating in this community will take a major related course together in the fall semester. Students will have direct contact and interaction with Bailey College of Engineering and Technology faculty and staff both inside and outside of their classroom setting.

The Eco Reps experience is a unique opportunity for students passionate about helping Indiana State University go green! Eco Reps will take a course together, have educational sessions with the Office of Sustainability, and work to promote sustainability in their residential area. Some of these responsibilities will include educating others in your residence hall, monitoring waste and energy metrics, and planning programs/competitions to reduce our ecologic footprint. Eco Reps will move in one week early and participate in an outdoor retreat focused on team-building and sustainability. 

The Gender Inclusive community provides an inclusive environment where specific gender assignments are not required. Students who agree to live in the community must sign a second community contract with Residential Life pledging to assist in providing a safe and inclusive environment for all in the community. The community will focus on providing and sustaining a welcoming community for LGBTQ+ students and allies.

This community is for students with majors relating to the health professions, including the College of Health and Human services, but also Pre-Dental and Pre-Medicine, among others. Students in this select community will have learning opportunities centered around development in the health professions and beyond. It’s hard to know what’s most enticing to Honors College applicants: the chance to take classes like “Philosophy in the Twilight Zone” or the opportunity to live in Pickerl or Burford Hall, two of our coolest residence halls. Boasting open lounges, study spaces, and sound-proof practice rooms in Pickerl, as well as sound-proof practice rooms, a performance stage for artists, and spacious meeting rooms in Burford, these buildings are perfect for Honors students.

The Honors College offers a rich social and intellectual experience to high-achieving students, and was among the first to unite students in a residential learning community at State. Honors students come from all majors and backgrounds. Once admitted to the college, they examine far-flung topics in an Honors-only curriculum that replaces standard foundational studies classes. They also work closely with faculty to invent brand-new learning experiences within their major. Participants and faculty become like family as they share small classes, discussion groups, field trips, and study abroad. It’s easy to stay in touch, because the Honors College Office is right on-site in Pickerl, along with a dedicated Honors classroom and plenty of room to socialize.

Participation in a UC 110 course and a social justice course or workshop series, as well as living together in community, serve as foundational requirements for the program. Students come together and support each other as they navigate academic challenges, develop interpersonal relationships, explore topics of difference, and prepare today for tomorrow’s successes.

Students will move-in one week early and engage with each other in building community, with faculty and staff from across campus, and learn about all that Indiana State has to offer!

The I-Succeed Program was created to assist historically underrepresented students with the transition from high school to Indiana State University. I-Succeed addresses issues that commonly impede student success such as time management, engagement (academic and social), and study skills.

Through I-Succeed students can develop strong academic skills, leadership and professional skills that will help them throughout college and beyond. And by living in community together, students develop a community and network of fellow scholars.

I-Succeed offers the I-Succeed Success Strategies course, designed to help the student successfully navigate “college culture;” which is a combination of academics, positive socialization with others not like you, and “adulting 101.” The course targets Work/Life Balance, defining yourself within a new environment, healthy relationship building, proven study strategies, & campus Involvement.

I-Succeed students will move in early for workshops and programs to help students acclimate to campus and develop their network prior to the start of classes.

Lead is dedicated to developing students into future leaders on our campus and beyond. Student leadership skills will be sharpened through community service, inclusiveness, effective communication, self-discovery, personal growth, and involvement. Members strive for excellence while keeping a positive attitude, being responsible, compassionate, and serving as a positive role model for others. Students will learn how to get involved with and affect positive change in organizations. Lead will give students the skills they need to step up and succeed in leadership positions. Lead students will move-in one week early to begin building community and familiarize themselves with campus. Lead students also take a common course on the study of leadership together in the fall semester.

Are you interested in the study of language and culture?

Lingua Franca House might be for you! Lingua Franca is a language immersion community for French, German, Japanese, Latin, or Spanish languages and culture. Students living in the Lingua Franca community will have access to a great community of students who love planning cultural meals and cultural activities, studying together, and interacting daily, while further developing their language and culture skills. Students can expect meal outings, monthly coordinated cultural events, and the opportunity to study with other students in their specific language. Students living in the Lingua Franca Community can select roommates from anyone else in the community.

Pathway to Blue is focused on helping students best prepare for their time at State and beyond. Students in this community take all their Ivy Tech classes on ISU's campus, live in the same residence hall, and have full access to on-campus dining, facilities, clubs, and events. A concentrated focus on helping students successfully transition to State through workshops, co-academic advising, and community events makes the pathway to blue a reality.

• Participate in a first-year summer bridge program prior to the first week of classes
• Participate in a living learning community that supports both social and academic success
• Establish relationships with faculty, staff, and administrators from across campus 
• Build a supportive peer network
• Learn about campus resources 
• Engage with an upper-class peer and alumni mentors
• Complete a success class each year that is tied to their foundational studies curriculum. These courses will satisfy 4 of their foundational studies categories for a total of 12 credit hours
• Begin a comprehensive career readiness program linked to their Project Success course
• Introduce high impact learning experiences including but not limited to community engagement, experiential learning, undergraduate research, and study abroad activities

The ROTC Living-Learning Community provides students the opportunity to live in a community with others who are interested in military service. Here you will have access to support networks and mentors within the ROTC program, and establish life-long relationships to help you professionally and personally through your college and military career.  Residents will experience traditions, customs, and comradery with current members of Army and Air Force ROTC programs.

ROTC LLC residents must enroll as active cadets in their respective ROTC branch and membership in the LLC is subject to Detachment or Battalion approval.

Ever been inspired by an exceptional teacher? Do you want to be an inspiring teacher? The Secondary Ed. Living Learning Community unites future teachers across a range of fields – English and Social Studies, Art and Math, Science and Languages – in pursuit of their passion. Your fellow community members, as well as those of past and future Secondary Education Communities, will hopefully serve as a supporters and cheerleaders on your journey at ISU, and your professional network as you go out into the educational world. In addition to taking a common class, students will have the opportunities to network with alumni who are currently teachers, meet with and discuss the art of teaching with some of ISU’s best professors, and join teaching-relating organizations. Students can expect meal outings with residents and regularly coordinated events.

The SPARK Living Learning Community will give you the opportunity to surround yourself with a network of entrepreneurs and resources that will help you build a company, develop a product, or explore your business start-up ideas. Build your business while you build lifelong friendships in an exclusive community that gives you the opportunity to gain practical entrepreneurial skills in energetic settings. Students will have the opportunity to attend pitch competitions, socialize with founders, and network with the entrepreneurial community. 

To assist them on their journey to starting the next great business, students will also have access to the Sycamore Innovation Lab, prototyping equipment, drones, 3D printers, photo/video equipment, and a variety of other maker resources. 

The Transfer Student Community is built specifically for transfer students. We understand that as a transfer student, you prefer a slightly different experience that what a new student might. Our staff give you all the tools bring you in to the Sycamore family quickly, while not overwhelming you with things you may already know.
