Make sure to email, telephone, or write to your roommate before coming to campus. Discuss what you are going bring, this will help eliminate the duplication of TVs, refrigerators, stereos, etc. This is a good time to discuss room decorations, may be coordinate bedspreads and start to get to know each other.

bullet

Check your parent(s) home owner's insurance policy to make sure your personal property is going to be covered while it is on the ISU campus. If it is not covered, it is strongly suggest that you purchase a Renter's Insurance policy to cover any possible loss or damage to personal property. Having a computer damaged can be a costly expense. Please consult Section 16 of the Terms and Conditions of Occupancy in Indiana State University Residence Halls, which states," The University cannot assume responsibility for loss of or damage to , personal property, for failure or interruption of utilities, or injury to persons."

Think about safety issues: where is a safe place to keep the check book, credit cards and cash. Talk to your parent(s) about whether you should loan personal items: car, computer, clothes, etc.

Talk to your parent(s) about the many credit card offers that will be mailed to you. This is a good time to take about money management in general.

How Can I make move-in easier?

bullet

New students are assigned a move-in date and time. Residential Life does this to help distribute the number of students moving in at one time. If for some reason you cannot move-in during your assigned time, come when you can there is no need to notify us of your new arrive date or time. However, you must claim your room by 6:00 p.m. on the first day of classes.

bullet

Park in one of the many parking lots near the residence hall the student is moving into. Park in designated parking spaces only. Be sure not block traffic flow or obstruct handicap ramps or sidewalks.

bullet

Pack a two wheel dolly and have it handy so that it is one of the first things you unpack from your vehicle.

bullet

Pack a fan and place it where you can find it. It is very helpful to have it running in the room while you are unpacking the vehicle.

bullet

Be patient the Residential Life staff will work hard to see that the check-in process is quick and simple. However, if 100 people all arrive at once, it will take some time.

bullet

Be prepared to either wait for an elevator or take the stairs if you are moving onto a lower floor. The number of elevators are limited and there will be many individuals moving into the halls.

bullet

Once you have your vehicle unloaded, please move it to an outer parking lot. This helps those just arriving to unload.

bullet

Take the time to meet the Resident Assistant (RA) for the floor/suite.

bullet

Encourage your student to make sure they complete the Room Inventory Form, this is the form that will be used at the time of move-out to determine if there are any room damages that need to be charged to the students of that room.

bullet

If you have any questions or concerns find a residence hall staff member. Don't leave with questions or concerns.

Do I have to move everything out during the break times? (Thanksgiving, Winter Break, Spring Break, etc.)?

No, as long as you remain enrolled and plan to return after the break.  Most halls close over extended break periods:  Thanksgiving, Winter, and Spring.  Mills Hall is open for the entire academic year.  Hines Hall is open for  an extended period of Winter Break and all of Spring Break.  Lincoln Quad is open for an extended period of Winter Break and for all of Thanksgiving and Spring Breaks. There is an addition charge for students staying during the breaks.   Summer Housing is available in Lincoln Quad for students enrolled in summer classes.
