PROBLEM SOLVING
Through the Creative Problem Solving Initiative, the Blumberg Center has historically supported building-level general education intervention (GEI) teams and case conference teams through trainings in Creative Problem Solving for GEI (CPS for GEI), Essential Facilitation for Individualized Education Program Meetings (FIEP) and Co-Facilitation. CPS for GEI has been implemented in hundreds of schools across Indiana and has supported team collaboration and the development of intervention plans. View the following link for more information regarding CPS for GEI.
The original CPS for GEI process has been advanced to support those implementing response to intervention and is offered under the title "Building Based Teams for GEI". The CPSP currently offers the following professional development, technical assistance and resources related to problem solving. Trainings and Technical Assistance
Training to support Grade Level Teams in the use of a problem solving model to address students' academic and/or behavioral needs across the grade level is available on a limited basis to schools with specific training requests. Grade level personnel use comprehensive student assessment data to inform instructional and intervention practices. Training to support Building Based Teams in the use of a problem solving model to address targeted students' academic and/or behavioral needs is available upon request. Diverse teams, which may include teachers, student support personnel, administrators, and families, analyze comprehensive assessment data to identify student needs and develop focused, research-based interventions. Training to teach essential facilitation skills for conducting efficient and effective meetings that result in legally compliant IEPs is available to parent advocates and school personnel (maximum 25 participants per training). IEP team members use facilitative techniques to make small agreements and reach consensus. Decision making tools support collaboration and the development of a student's individualize educational program. Location will be posted when finalized. Registration Contact Person: Le Ann Mott 812-237-7880 lmott@isugw.indstate.edu In co-facilitated meetings, a parent and school personnel serve as neutral facilitators. Co-facilitators guide the case conference committee to build trusting relationships and develop a legally compliant and effective IEP. Training for individuals who have completed the FIEP training and have an interest in co-facilitating complex case conference meetings is available to individuals based upon a recommendation from a school administrator, advocate-training agency, and/or facilitator. Potential trainees must demonstrate a working knowledge of the facilitation process and the ability to apply the process consistently in day-to-day case conference meetings. Additionally, one must demonstrate respect for the goal of collaboration in student-centered meetings, ability to use facilitation techniques as a meeting member, and ability to support appropriate meeting outcomes for students.
