Subtopic Summaries

In this section we present five major subtopics under the Main Topic of "Remedial Strategies". The following information provides a brief description of the contents and links to in-depth discussions.

green bullet Instructional Strategies for Overcoming Reading Disabilities: What Works?
Reading instruction has to be individually tailored and depends on the nature of the child's reading disability. Several approaches have been tried and found to be successful. They can be broadly defined as attempts to improve decoding skills and efforts to improve reading comprehension.
green bullet Instructional Strategies for Improving Word Recognition Skills
At the beginning stages of the acquisition of words, phonics and phonics-related exercises are helpful.
green bullet Instructional Strategies for Improving Reading Fluency
Even though decoding skill is a prerequisite for word recognition skills, it is not sufficient for skilled reading. A child may be a good decoder but can still remain as a poor reader because he cannot recognize words instantly. The only strategy known to improve fluency at this point in time is to read, read, and read.
green bullet Instructional Strategies for Improving Comprehension Skills
In order to comprehend text, word recognition should become automatic so that the reader can focus on the strategies that aid comprehension.
green bullet Teaching Reading to Children with Symptoms of Down Syndrome and Autism
Many children with these disabilities experience great difficulty in learning letters and letter names. These children are said to benefit from the use of alternate strategies.
