Dr. Mark Frederick has been interested in assessment instrument design throughout his professional career, beginning with the co-creation of The College Student Self-Efficacy Assessment, which was the center point of his doctoral dissertation and The College Transfer Student Self-Efficacy Instrument. In his position as Director of Assessment in the Office of Research and Effectiveness for the Division of Student Affairs at Indiana State University, he saw a need for a valid and reliable instrument that would effectively measure holistic student growth, learning and development from the students’ perspective. Working with Dr. Will Barratt, the UniLOA was developed that seeks to inform higher education faculty, staff, and administrators of students’ behaviors and how those behaviors impact their own educational experience.
Mark served in the private sector as a Nursing Facility Administrator and a case worker in community mental health before he engaged his graduate studies, which led him to the field of education.  During his formal graduate academic training he served in a variety of practicum placements, including the Indiana State University Counseling Center, the Indiana Rural Health Family Practice Residency Program, the Indiana State University Sports Consultancy Program and a fellowship in the Office of Institutional Research and Planning at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. He completed his year long, pre-doctoral counseling internship at the Southern Illinois University Student Counseling Center.

While serving as a career counselor at Indiana State University, he was instrumental in the introduction of a developmental model aimed at promoting career counseling services to undergraduate college students early in their academic experience. He wrote, produced, and presented the 8-hour video series “Introduction to the Theories of Career Counseling” and has presented programs at national and international conferences regarding student development.
