Student Publications Status Within ISU
Student Publications is a
department within ISU’s Student Affairs Division. The director of
Student Publications reports directly to the Associate Vice
President for Student Affairs. While the umbrella department reports
to the administration, the student editors and student advertising
managers are independent of any such reporting.
The department’s two publications — the Indiana Statesman and IQ
magazine — are categorized as auxiliary enterprises, that is,
enterprises that earn incomes that are auxiliary to the university’s
general operating budget. Both publications still do receive
appropriations of student fee money.
The Student Publications department is not formally linked with any
academic area, although the compatible nature of its pursuits allies
it most especially with the Journalism area within the Communication
Department, with the Graphic Arts area of the Art Department and
with several areas of the School of Business.
