Frequently Asked Questions:

Q:  How do I apply?

A:  You apply to this program through the regular University School of Medicine Admission Process. Please follow all the guidelines and identify your interest in the Terre Haute Rural Medicine Program.

Admission to the rural program also requires:

·        A separate Rural Medicine application where your essays will be evaluated;

·        A secondary interview in Terre Haute.  The interviewing committee consists of community leaders from non-metropolitan counties as well members of the IUSM admissions committee.

Q:  Will my degree have the same accreditation as the regular program?

 A:  Your medical degree will be no different from the medical students in the non-rural program.

Q:  Will I have a separate curriculum from the regular program students, or will I be taught the same material?

 A:  The core curriculum is the same as for the regular program students.  You will be in class with the regular program students taking the same exams.

Q:  How will my education differ from the other medical students at IU?

 A:  You will remain at the Terre Haute campus for all 4 years of medical school.  The coursework for the first two years is the same; however you will have rural physician preceptors as well other learning opportunities unique to the rural program (patient longitudinal experience; rural program student interest group; rural public health education; etc…).  During the second two years, the rural program student will remain based in Terre Haute for clinical rotations in rural settings, whenever possible.

Q:  Will I have access to the same resources as the medical students in the non-rural program?

 A:   As a medical student at IU School of Medicine, you will have access to all the resources available to every medical student.

Q:  What type of physician (specializations) can I be? Am I limited?

A:   This program will prepare primary care physicians for the rural areas and will encourage specializations in family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics or obstetrics/gynecology.

Q:  Are there scholarships geared towards this program?

 A:  You will be eligible to apply for scholarships from the National Health Service Corps or from the Indiana Primary Care Scholarship program.

Q:   How well will this program prepare me to be the type of physician I want to be?

 A:  The program is focused on Rural Primary Care Physicians and the hands-on experiences start within the first semester with rural physician preceptors.  This opportunity is unique to the Terre Haute regional campus.
