Gold Humanism Honor Society Holds Inaugural Induction of Members

INDIANAPOLIS - The inaugural induction ceremony for the Indiana University School of Medicine Chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS) was recently held at the Omni Severin Hotel. Forty members of the class of 2006 were recognized for being exemplars of integrity, clinical competence, compassionate care and community service.

Indiana University School of Medicine received a grant from the Arnold P. Gold Foundation to establish a chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society. By encouraging the creation of chapters in medical schools around the country, The Gold Foundation seeks to honor senior medical students, residents, role-model physician teachers and other exemplars who demonstrate excellence in clinical care, leadership, compassion and dedication to service.

Dean Craig Brater, M.D. gave the keynote address, "Musings on Humanism at IUSM" in which he related the GHHS to other programs already established on campus including the Competency Based Curriculum and the Relationship Centered Care Initiative. He ended his portion of the program with two heartfelt stories, one from an IUSM Emergency Medicine Resident and the other from Dr. John Sidle, an IUSM faculty member currently practicing in the IU-Moi program in Kenya . Both stories described the practice of medicine as a true calling rather than a job, and described humanism in medicine at its finest. The inductees received certificates and gold pins from Allison Sole, Program Officer from the National Gold Humanism Honor Society. Awards presented at the ceremony included:

In addition, the Gerald Bepko Award for Professionalism, was presented to Jamie Spurrier and the Gerald Bepko Award for Community Service was presented to Shannon Gearhart. Each award was for $500.

The Janice M. Pascuzzi Scholarship for Excellence in Compassionate Care was presented to Michelle Crone, Christina Derstine, Phillip Lammers, Nkieruka Nwoko, and Jamie Spurrier. Each scholarship is for $1,000.

Approximately 15% of the graduating class was selected through a process including peer and faculty nomination followed by a review of each student's required essays, clerkship comments and record of community service.
