Mike O'Sullivan, a student in Mechanical Technology, had an internship at JDH Contracting in Plainfield, IN. JDH Contracting is a construction company that specializes in fiber optics and tower structures for cellular communications and emergency alert systems. He interned in the Tower division specializing in design and analysis. He had to design the towers to be able to withstand the weather hazards of the particular area where the tower was to be built. Design included picking the right kind of metal for the job, choosing the right dimensions of the structural bracing, and determining the needed height for the given site. Once he designed the tower he got to supervise its construction. By the end of the summer he was responsible for the construction of 53 tower sites all over Michigan. His internship reinforced a lot of the things that he learned in class but also taught him a lot more. During the summer he made a lot of good friends and opened quite a few doors with the company. He has already been offered a position when he graduates to oversee the whole tower division of the company.
