Understanding College Success

Transitioning to college can be a daunting task. Sometimes it may feel like walking in a foreign land with different expectations and even, at times, a different language (what is "The Quad" anyway?? Is it a Res Hall? Is it the grassy area in front of the President's house? How am I supposed to know?). The University College is here to help guide you through that process, but it's up to you to make the correct choices and take the necessary steps to learn about how to be successful in this new environment. To use a common fishing analogy: We can guide you to the river, put the fishing pole in your hand, explain the fundamentals, but you, the student, have to make the CHOICE to cast the reel. It's up to you now -- here's some things to help you along the way.

1. ...ACCEPT SELF-RESPONSIBILITY, seeing themselves as the primary cause of their outcomes and experiences. 1. ...see themselves as Victims, believing that what happens to them is determined primarily by external forces such as fate, luck, and powerful others.
