Using Images in FrontPage

Changing an image to a web compatible format

While your final images should almost always be in either GIF or JPEG formats, you can insert images of other formats into FrontPage. Just be sure to convert them to GIF or JPEG before you publish your finished pages.

You can convert an image to GIF or JPEG within FrontPage by:

  1. Right clicking on an image and choosing Picture Properties
    FP image right-click menu
  2. Selecting the General tab and choosing either GIF or JPEG under Type.
    FP picture properties dialog
This is a good time to input some "Alt text" in the Alternate Representations box.
  3. The next time you save your page the Save Embedded Files window will appear, and the image will be converted to the chosen format.
You can also click on the Picture Options button to display a few Picture Options for the image files. There you may, again, choose between the GIF and JPEG formats for your final file.

Resizing an image

Frequently you'll want to resize an image on your web page.

  1. Fortunately this is an easy process in FrontPage. You can right click on an image, choose Picture Properties, and specify a height and width.
Make sure that the "Keep aspect ratio" box is checked if you don't want the final image to appear stretched and distorted.

  2. Or click on an image and drag its edges until you've reached the desired dimensions. FP drag image outline

The quality of the resized images will usually be good as long as you're reducing the image's size. Enlarged images will often appear blocky. If you want to significantly enlarge an image, it's best to start with an original that is larger.

If you make the image smaller by very much you should resample it. If you don't resample, the image's file size will be the same as the original, and you won't reduce the time it takes to download.

The resampled image will overwrite the original. You should always save a backup of your original under a different name before you resample in case you want to use or edit the original.

You can resample an image in FrontPage by:

  1. Opening the Picture Toolbar (by selecting View> Toolbars > Pictures)
FP menu path to picture toolbar - View> Toolbars > Pictures
  2. Clicking the Resample button on the toolbar.
