Welcome to the Department of Psychology!

The Psychology program at ISU encourages a spirit of active inquiry and critical thinking, life-long learning and development and social responsibility. The curriculum is based on the premise that any student of psychology, regardless of program goals, should be well-informed about basic principles of behavior. The undergraduate degree in psychology prepares students for graduate studies in psychology and related fields as well as employment in a variety of settings including health services, research, government and business.

Degree Programs

The Department of Psychology offers both undergraduate and graduate programs. Our graduate programs include a Master's (M.A./M.S.) in General Psychology and a Doctoral program (Psy.D.) in Clinical Psychology.

We also have a Psychology Clinic that provides services to students and members of the Terre Haute community.

Assistant or Associate Professor in Clinical Psychology

The Department of Psychology at Indiana State University invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of assistant or associate professor to begin Fall 2026. The position will primarily support our APA accredited clinical psychology doctoral (Psy.D.) program and include some undergraduate teaching. The position is open to clinical or counseling psychologists who are eligible for licensure and endorsement as a Health Service Provider in Psychology (HSPP) in Indiana. We welcome applications from individuals in all areas of clinical and counseling psychology, but candidates with interest and experience in clinical training/supervision, assessment, health psychology, or child/adolescent psychopathology are especially encouraged to apply. Individuals who may have had non-traditional career paths, who have taken time off for family reasons, or who have achieved excellence in careers outside of academia are also encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate level. The typical teaching load is 3 classes per semester
  • Supervision of empirical Psy.D. dissertations
  • Provide supervision for graduate students providing therapy and assessment service at our in-house training clinic
  • Maintain a program of research that involves students (graduate and/or undergraduate)
  • Contribute to service activities in the department and university

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D or PsyD in counseling or clinical psychology. ABD candidates will be considered but the degree should be awarded prior to the time the position begins.
  • Licensed or license-eligible and endorsement as Health Service Provider in Psychology (HSPP) in Indiana.
  • History or promise of teaching excellence

Preferred Qualifications

  • Interest and experience in clinical training/supervision
  • Ability to contribute to diversity-focused training in our clinical psychology doctoral program

Description of the Department

We have a very collegial department that includes 13 full-time faculty members who support an undergraduate, general masters, and doctoral program (PsyD) in Psychology. Faculty have the opportunity to teach summer courses (mostly online) for supplemental income. In addition, clinical faculty are encouraged to participate in our Faculty Practice Plan, which allows faculty to engage in clinical services through our on-site training clinic. The Department of Psychology at Indiana State University (ISU) invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin Fall, 2026. The position is open to candidates in any area of psychology, but we especially welcome applications from individuals who can teach classes in research methods, statistics, health psychology, developmental psychology, or I/O and related areas of psychology. Applicants may apply ABD, but must anticipate their earned doctorate from an accredited institution prior to the position starting date.

All candidates must demonstrate strong potential for effective teaching in our undergraduate and graduate programs, which include a BS in Psychology, an MA in experimental psychology, and a PsyD in clinical psychology. The typical teaching load is 3 classes/semester, and may include online as well as on-campus sections. Specific responsibilities will include teaching graduate and undergraduate courses, developing a program of research that can involve students, chairing theses and dissertations, and participating in service activities in the department and within the broader university. Psychology Faculty Spotlight: Courtney Wiesepape

Courtney Wiesepape, PsyD, graduated from Indiana State University’s Clinical Psychology program in 2022. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Indiana University School of Medicine focused on developing and evaluating interventions targeting stigma in early psychosis. Following her postdoc, Courtney provided clinical services at a VA clinic working with Veterans with serious mental illness (SMI). She joined ISU’s Psychology Department in 2025. Courtney’s research focuses on metacognition in serious mental illness, with particular emphasis on the experience of decentration and self-reflectivity. She trained with Dr. Paul Lysaker and continues to collaborate with colleagues in the MERIT Institute on a variety of projects. Courtney recently received a grant to conduct a study establishing metacognitive deficits in personality pathology and is collaborating with an international colleague on a project examining symptom-cluster stigma. Clinically, she is committed to a recovery-oriented approach that emphasizes meaning-making, agency, and functional goals for clients. At ISU, Courtney is excited to engage undergraduate and graduate students in research, and to bring metacognitive perspectives into both teaching and clinical supervision. When not on campus, she enjoys reading, caring for her many plants, exploring the joys of the Midwest, and spending time with her partner and dog.

Psychology Alumni Spotlight: Heather Bauer

Heather Bauer completed her bachelor’s degree in psychology and criminology and criminal justice at ISU in 2011. While at ISU, Heather worked in Housing and Residence Life and with the Summer Honors and Upward Bound Trio program. Her mentor and honors thesis advisor, Dr. Jennifer Schriver also taught her favorite class, Psychology & the Legal System. She completed her Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology at Ball State University in 2013 where she did her internship at the Ball State Counseling Center and co-authored two articles in Memory and Cognitive Psychology with her thesis chair, Dr. Kerri Pickel. She has been working in higher education for over 12 years. While at the University of Southern Indiana, she served as a principal investigator for a 1.2 million dollar grant, was named 2017 Outstanding Administrator of the Year, 2018 Student Organization Advisor of the year, and received grant funding in 2018 to take four first-generation students to China for a nine-day fully funded cultural immersion trip. She worked at the University of Tennessee Chattanooga in the Dean of Students office for a few years as well as a Clinical Research Associate at the University of South Florida. Currently, Heather serves as a Student Success Coordinator at the University of Louisville in the Office of Student Success. She serves as a resource for students who need extra assistance navigating their college experience, overcoming obstacles, and needing additional academic, financial, and personal support. This past year she was named a 2023-2024 Student Champion for going above and beyond to support student success.

Psychology Graduate Student Spotlight: Harry Hazelwood

Harry Hazelwood is a first-year student in the Clinical Psychology PsyD program at Indiana State. Originally from Henderson, Kentucky, Harry completed his undergraduate studies at Transylvania University in Lexington, KY. Before moving to Terre Haute, he lived in Evansville, Indiana, where he worked as a Probation Officer. Harry is broadly interested in clinical forensic psychology, with specific interests in violence and risk assessment, as well as forensic evaluations in both criminal and civil cases. He chose ISU for its strong faculty mentorship, particularly the opportunity to work with Dr. Schriver, whose expertise in psychology and law closely aligns with Harry’s interests. He was also drawn to the program's diverse research opportunities and its emphasis on clinical training. Outside of academics, Harry enjoys staying active, exploring new places, and meeting new people.

Psychology Undergraduate Student Spotlight: Drue Standish

Drue Standish is a sophomore psychology major at Indiana State University. He is from Lafayette, Indiana and chose ISU, in part, because his parents and other family members are alumni. Drue chose to major in psychology due to his interest mental health disorders. He is particularly interested in the causes of mental health disorders and how they can be treated effectively. He is also interested in men’s mental health and the stigma associated with psychological difficulties among men. Drue is currently involved with Dr. Virgil Sheets’ research team and is enjoying learning about research at a deeper level. Creating research projects and working with the research team have been his favorite experiences so far at ISU. Drue is a strong student and has been on the Dean’s List every term. His long-term career goals involve obtaining a master’s degree and becoming a therapist.
