President Trump, the U.S. Congress, and America’s Future on Immigration Policy

During his 2016 campaign and while president, Donald Trump has made immigration a cornerstone of his agenda to Make America Great Again. Congress has not felt the same way. In this seminar students will explore current immigration laws, congressional proposals for reforming immigration policies, and the mixed level of congressional support President Trump receives on immigration. One cannot understand debating a border wall along the Mexican border or an end to DACA protections without also understanding the racially charged messages that often come with these debates. Students in this course will examine the content of politicians’ speeches to asses if race is a motivating factor in congressional proposals to reform immigration laws in America.
