Sean Carey, '14

Sean CareySean Carey was hired with Kokomo School Corporation in December of 2014.  At Kokomo Schools he teachers violin, orchestra, and general music at Wallace Elementary School of Integrated Arts.  He was also hired to help build the orchestra program at Central Middle International School.  While Sean has been at the middle school, the orchestra program has grown from 15 students to about 60 students in 2 years! There is now enough interest to start an orchestra at the high school level as well. At Wallace, each week the students all receive 4 classes of Violin instruction, 4 classes of Piano instruction, one Dance class a week, as well as Spanish and Art.  Kindergarteners and first graders also get 2 classes of general music a week.  Sean also implemented an orchestra program at the elementary level, since the students begin violin in Kindergarten, and by third grade are fairly proficient on the instrument.  Third grade, fourth grade, and fifth graders all get one orchestra class a week to help develop the different techniques specific to orchestra so they are prepared for the middle school orchestras.  He has been to Kennedy Center’s Arts Integration conference in Washington D.C. with his fellow colleagues to learn more about integrating the arts into the classroom. At Central Middle, there are 2 orchestras now, a Beginning Orchestra and an Advanced Orchestra, both of which perform each semester at multiple events for the school. This year the program had 18 students perform at ISSMA Solo and Ensemble, and each student received gold ratings!  The hope is to enter the orchestras into ISSMA Organizational next year.

Sean also works as Kokomo Symphony Orchestra Youth Programs director, in which he directs the Kokomo Symphony Youth Orchestra and oversees the programs.  The Youth Programs involves a beginning and intermediate violin class, a cello and bass course, and also the advanced youth symphony.  The KSYO performs with the Kokomo Symphony Orchestra on multiple concerts and performs around the community as well.  Sean also performs with Kokomo Symphony Orchestra and Kokomo Civic Theatre on separate occasions as well.

Sean is currently in process of building a house with his wife, Kelsie, who teaches in Kokomo School Corporation Lafayette Park Elementary.  There, she is a fifth grade teacher. Together, they are in the process of building a house in Kokomo, Indiana and plan on starting a family.

Sean Carey was a 2010 President’s Scholar and graduated from the Honors Program in the fall of 2014 here at Indiana State University. He graduated Magna Cum Laude with a B.M.E, Bachelors of Music Education.
